If you didn’t already know, a Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. In our preference, a standard poodle. We just love big, teddy bear dogs. If you have never had a Bernese, you are missing out on one of the most loving and sweet tempered dogs that you’ll ever encountered.
The Bernese Mountain Dog, also known as a Berner, is a large, powerful, and sturdy Swiss working dog breed. Developed in the Swiss Alps, they originated over 2,000 years ago when Roman invaders brought Molossian mastiff-type dogs to the region. Berners were historically used for farm work, pulling carts, herding cattle, and guarding farms. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1937. Big, powerful, and built for hard work, the Bernese is also strikingly beautiful and blessed with a sweet, affectionate nature. They generally do well with children, as they are very affectionate and patient dogs that take well to children climbing over them. Although they have great energy, a Bernese will be just as happy with a calm evening.
Our first Bernese that we ever owned would walk up to us and wrap her paw around the lower part of our leg and lean in and hug us. The first time she did that we just melted. What other dog can feel that much love?
The only slight downfall of the Bernese Mountain Dog is the amount of shedding, enter the poodle. This cross will produce a low to non-shedding dog. This is the reason we love this breed. 2 out of 3 of our children have pretty intense allergies to dog dander. The Bernedoodle, with the amazing personality traits of the Bernese and the hypoallergenic genes from the poodle was the perfect solution. We also love the fact that these doodles are less likely to be high energy, as opposed to other doodles that are usually the combination of a retriever and a poodle. So if you love big, cuddly family dogs but suffer with allergies, the Bernedoodle may be the perfect fit for you and your family.
